Buttstädt: Sleeping thief under drug influence
On Friday morning, 26 June 2026, an alleged thief in the Weimarer Land district came to the attention of Sömmerda police inspection. Following a theft caught in the act, officers had located an escape vehicle near the locality of Buttstädt – and found a man sleeping in the driver's seat. What initially appeared to be an unusual end to a pursuit developed into proceedings involving at least six criminal offences, including driving without a valid licence and driving under the influence of intoxicating substances.
Theft caught in the act in the Weimarer Land
The police operation began with a theft that had been discovered while still in progress. The term "caught in the act" means that offenders are still in immediate temporal and spatial connection with the offence or are apprehended immediately afterwards. In such cases, investigators act particularly quickly to secure evidence and prevent escape.
Sömmerda police, part of the Erfurt state police inspection, had been alerted following the incident in the Weimarer Land. The Weimarer Land is a district in Thuringia forming the southern part of the Erfurt administrative region. The responsible officers immediately launched a search for the escape vehicle and focused their attention on traffic routes in the area.
Escape vehicle discovered in Buttstädt
In the area of the locality of Buttstädt, a small town in the Sömmerda district with around 2,600 inhabitants, the sought vehicle was finally spotted. Buttstädt lies on federal highway B87 and connects important transport routes in central Thuringia. There, police officers came across a car containing a male person in the driver's seat – apparently asleep.
Particularly striking was the fact that the ignition key was still in the vehicle's ignition lock. This gave officers an unusual but clear indication: the man had apparently become so exhausted or indifferent that he had fallen asleep in the middle of the escape situation. The ironic title of the police report – "Rested on success" – refers precisely to this scene.
Identification of a police-known man
The sleeping man was already known to police officers from previous contacts. Based on the suspect description compiled in connection with the theft, he could be identified beyond doubt. A witness had also described the man as the driver of the car, further substantiating his role in the incident.
The combination of police prior history, witness testimony and physical presence at the scene gave investigators a solid basis for further measures. Even on site, officers began systematically documenting the facts and coordinating the next steps with the public prosecutor's office.
Unregistered vehicle with stolen plates
During inspection of the car, officers found several serious deficiencies. The vehicle was not registered and bore stolen licence plates. Various tools and a small oil barrel were also found inside. District administration stickers were discovered in the vehicle and later seized.
The items were seized as part of the vehicle search conducted after consultation with the Erfurt public prosecutor's office. In addition to the tools, oil barrel and stickers, the car itself was seized for danger prevention. The reason: the man had repeatedly driven vehicles on public roads without a valid licence and under the influence of intoxicating substances.
Narcotics consumption and driving under drug influence
A central aspect of the case concerns the man's relationship with narcotics. According to police information, he consumes drugs daily. He also does not hold a valid driving licence. Together, this means he must answer for driving without a licence as well as driving under the influence of intoxicating substances.
Driving under the influence of narcotics is a criminal offence in Germany under Section 24a of the Road Traffic Act. Anyone who drives a motor vehicle without driving fitness and under drug influence endangers not only themselves but also other road users considerably. Police act consistently in such cases and usually order a blood sample to forensically secure proof of intoxicating substances.
Blood sample at nearby hospital
After officers woke the man and searched the vehicle, a blood sample was also taken at a nearby hospital. This medical measure serves to objectively establish substances in the blood and forms the basis for a possible criminal proceeding for driving under drug influence. The laboratory result will be incorporated into further investigations by the public prosecutor's office and the court.
The Erfurt public prosecutor's office had been involved in the decision-making process before the vehicle search and further measures. This coordination between police and prosecution is common in serious criminal offences and repeated traffic violations and ensures that all steps are carried out in accordance with the law.
At least six criminal offences at issue
Overall, the driver must now answer for at least six criminal offences. In addition to the theft caught in the act, driving without a licence and driving under drug influence, further offences arise from the unauthorised vehicle, stolen plates and seized items. The precise breakdown of individual charges is the responsibility of the competent investigative authorities.
