Bonn police: focused checks on drug crime
On Friday evening, 26 June 2026, officers from Bonn police conducted another large-scale series of targeted checks to combat knife, violent and drug-related crime across the city. The operation was part of an established series of cross-agency measures through which security authorities in Bonn take targeted action against offences that particularly undermine public confidence in safety. Checks in the weapons ban zone and in shisha bars
Particular attention was paid to the weapons ban zone around Bonn central station, where police have repeatedly recorded problems with knife offences and acts of violence. In addition to checks in this sensitive area, three bars in the city centre and one restaurant in Bad Godesberg were inspected during the operation. The choice of premises formed part of targeted action against drug-related and associated crime in the hospitality sector, where shisha establishments are frequently a focus of customs and police checks. The combination of city-centre controls, traffic monitoring and targeted visits to premises was intended to cover as broad a range of offences as possible.
Results of person and vehicle checks
During the operation, officers checked a total of 198 people and 60 vehicles. Three knives and one baton were seized. Criminal investigations were opened against several individuals: one case involved shoplifting, and two further cases concerned assault offences. In road traffic, officers recorded numerous violations. In 24 cases they issued penalty notices for traffic offences, and 20 road users received a warning fine. A total of nine people checked were given dispersal orders. Bonn's municipal public order office issued two penalty notices, including one for a violation of the Cannabis Consumption Act.
Violations of the Cannabis Consumption Act and finds involving minors
In connection with combating drug crime, officers also encountered violations of the Cannabis Consumption Act. Among other things, a breach was identified in which cannabis was consumed in the immediate vicinity of a children's playground. This incident led to a penalty notice from Bonn's municipal public order office and shows that police are monitoring not only hard drugs but also legal yet regulated cannabis use. During checks of 41 people, officers also found several vapes and cigarettes in the possession of young people. After being instructed by officers, the minors disposed of the items found. The measure underlines the preventive approach of Bonn police in warning young people early about the risks of consumption and consistently removing corresponding items.
Customs seizes shisha tobacco and checks employment conditions
Cologne customs officers found evidence of offences during checks at each of the shisha bars inspected. Customs seized a total of around 50 kilograms of untaxed shisha tobacco. Criminal proceedings were initiated on the spot against the respective bar operators. Investigations by Cologne customs are continuing and may, alongside tax consequences, also provide further indications of associated offences in the context of drug-related crime. In addition to tax violations, labour-law aspects were also a focus of the checks. Seven employees found on the premises were inspected. In six cases, concrete indications of breaches of employment and social insurance regulations emerged.
Indications of minimum wage and undeclared work
For three employees, there were indications that they were not being paid the statutory minimum wage. Two service staff had apparently not been registered for social insurance by their employers and were therefore working illegally. One bar operator also failed to keep the working-time records required under minimum wage legislation. These findings are now being pursued by the competent authorities and, alongside ongoing customs investigations, may lead to further legal consequences for the operators.
