THC at the wheel: A27 traffic stop

On Monday around midday, a 33-year-old driver came to the attention of the authorities during a check by Bremen Main Customs Office on the A27 motorway. What began as a routine inspection of an Audi car at the Bütteler Holz rest area toward Cuxhaven quickly developed into a case with a clear narcotics link. Indications of possible drug impairment of the driver led officers from the Geestland police station to be called in.

At about 12:00 noon, customs officers from Bremen Main Customs Office checked the Audi at the rest stop on the A27. The Bütteler Holz parking area lies on the stretch between Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven and is regularly used for traffic checks. During the inspection of the 33-year-old driver, officers found indications pointing to impairment by narcotics. Customs then stopped further travel and notified the responsible police.

Cuxhaven Police Inspectorate reports that officers from the Geestland police station subsequently arrived on scene. Their task was to examine the suspicion further and secure the necessary evidence. In cases of suspected drug use behind the wheel, practice follows a staged procedure of roadside pre-test, medical measure and traffic-law decision. Exactly this pattern was applied here as well.

Positive THC pre-test and admission

A police pre-test returned positive for the parameter THC. THC is the psychoactive substance in cannabis and is especially relevant in road traffic because it can impair perception, reaction time and judgment. The 33-year-old driver also admitted having consumed cannabis the evening before. The positive rapid test and the driver's own statement therefore aligned on a central point.

For the authorities, the suspicion of driving under the influence of cannabis was thereby concretely supported. A positive pre-test alone does not replace a final forensic assessment, but it provides a solid basis for further measures. A blood sample was therefore taken from the driver. The blood analysis is intended to clarify which concentration of the substance was present at the time of the check and what legal assessment follows from that. Regardless of the final laboratory result, officers prohibited the 33-year-old from continuing his journey. This decision serves to protect all road users. Anyone under the influence of THC can often no longer reliably detect hazards. On a busy motorway such as the A27, even brief inattention can have serious consequences. That is why the immediate measure takes priority over a later final assessment.

The measure also shows how closely customs and police cooperate in suspected cases. Customs provided the first indication; police took over the specialized examination and traffic-law safeguarding. Such interfaces are common in everyday drug enforcement in road traffic and are meant to prevent suspected drivers from continuing unchecked.
