Ettlingen: Drugs found after police chase crash

Late on Saturday evening, a dramatic police operation unfolded in Ettlingen that ended with a pursuit, a serious traffic accident and the subsequent seizure of narcotics. A 20-year-old Mercedes driver evaded a check by Ettlingen police station at around 11:20 p.m. and continued his escape at excessive speed. He later lost control of the vehicle, crashed into a tree and then fled on foot. During a search of the car, officers also secured small amounts of narcotics along with a knife and cash.

According to the current state of investigations by Karlsruhe police headquarters, the young driver was travelling on Lindenweg in Ettlingen late on Saturday evening. In this area, Ettlingen police station had set up a checkpoint as part of regular traffic monitoring. When the Mercedes driver reached the checkpoint, he initially gave the impression that he intended to stop his vehicle. However, the 20-year-old then abruptly continued driving and moved off at excessive speed towards Mörscher Straße. For the officers deployed, this meant the immediate transition from a routine traffic check to an active pursuit operation.

Pursuit towards Mörscher Straße

Police officers immediately launched a search for the fleeing Mercedes driver. Pursuits in urban areas pose particular challenges for emergency services, as high speeds and unpredictable manoeuvres can escalate the situation within seconds. The escape led from the checkpoint on Lindenweg to Mörscher Straße, where patrols eventually found the Mercedes on a green strip.

There, the pursuit apparently ended in a serious accident in which the driver had lost control of the vehicle. Police pursuit measures are always carried out with regard to protecting the general public from danger. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle while it was still moving and bring the situation under control.

Accident on the green strip

According to police information, the 20-year-old driver responsible for the accident crashed into a tree before bringing the Mercedes to a halt on the green strip. In this case, the driver himself apparently remained sufficiently uninjured to continue fleeing on foot after the impact. Police believe he left the scene before officers were able to arrest him.

The 22-year-old female passenger of the Mercedes remained at the accident scene. She was slightly injured in the crash and was taken to hospital as a precaution by an ambulance crew. Precautionary admissions are intended to rule out injuries that are not immediately visible and to provide medical care for those affected.

Search of the Mercedes

After the accident vehicle had been secured, officers systematically searched the Mercedes. They seized several items that are significant for the further investigation. In addition to a knife and cash, the emergency services also found small amounts of narcotics in the vehicle. The police do not specify the exact type of substances or concrete quantities in grams or kilograms in their report.

Nevertheless, the discovery was sufficient to include a violation of narcotics law alongside the traffic-related allegations in the investigation. The seizure of drugs in a vehicle that had previously evaded a police check considerably changes the legal character of the incident. In the course of further investigations, the driver responsible for the accident has since been identified. It also emerged that the 20-year-old did not hold a valid driving licence. Driving without a licence constitutes a separate criminal offence in Germany and, in combination with endangering road traffic, increases the criminal severity of the overall incident.

The young man must now answer, among other things, for endangering road traffic, driving without a licence and violating narcotics law. Endangering road traffic covers driving behaviour that puts other road users at considerable risk, for example through excessive speed or evading a police check. The narcotics allegation relates to the small amounts seized during the vehicle search.
