At around 07:20 a 45-year-old Volkswagen driver was subjected to a traffic check on Nachtweide street in 67433 Neustadt/Weinstraße. Officers established that the man was under the influence of cannabis. The driver admitted having smoked a joint the previous Sunday. Even though, by his own account, consumption had taken place several days earlier, the established influence was sufficient to trigger further measures.
Afterwards the vehicle key was handed over to an acquaintance of the driver. This was intended to prevent the 45-year-old from continuing the journey. At the same time, officers took a blood sample intended to substantiate the cannabis use and the impairment in road traffic. The laboratory analysis forms the basis for further proceedings.
Second stop on Spitalbachstraße
Only a few hours later, at around 10:15, officers checked a 20-year-old woman with her Volkswagen on Spitalbachstraße. It was also established that she was under the influence of THC. THC is the main psychoactive substance in cannabis and can impair reaction times, attention and judgement. Police secured the vehicle key and likewise took a blood sample from the young woman.
The two stops show that journeys under the influence of cannabis are not only detected at night or at weekends. On a weekday morning, two independent cases were documented in the urban area within about three hours.
