Wilhelmshaven: Scooter rider under narcotics
Wilhelmshaven/Friesland police inspection has summarised a series of police operations in the port city and surrounding area for the weekend of 26 to 28 June 2026. Alongside traffic offences, attempted burglaries and hit-and-run incidents, one case with a narcotics connection stands out in particular: a scooter rider fled from a patrol, was tracked down and showed drug-related abnormalities during the check. Several proceedings have been initiated against him, including for driving under the influence of narcotics.
Flight and discovery on Rheinstraße
Wilhelmshaven is located on the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony and, with around 77,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in the Friesland region. On Friday evening, 26 June 2026, at around 9.30 p.m., a police patrol observed a scooter rider in Rheinstraße 104 who evaded a routine traffic check by fleeing. Officers immediately initiated a search in the immediate vicinity and were able to locate the abandoned vehicle a short time later.
The person responsible for the vehicle initially remained hidden in the immediate area. During further checks, it emerged that the 34-year-old man from Wilhelmshaven neither held a valid driving licence nor had the vehicle he was operating properly insured. Both circumstances constitute independent violations of road traffic law and intensify the legal assessment of the entire incident.
Narcotics suspicion and blood sample
In addition, drug-related abnormalities were observed in the young man. Police officers therefore ordered a blood sample to forensically secure the suspicion of driving under the influence of narcotics. The man from Wilhelmshaven was prohibited from continuing his journey. Proceedings have been initiated against him for illegal street racing, driving without a licence, violation of compulsory insurance law and driving under the influence of narcotics.
Driving under the influence of narcotics is prosecuted in Germany under Section 24a of the Road Traffic Act and poses a considerable hazard to all road users. The combination of flight from police, lack of insurance, lack of a driving licence and possible drug impairment makes the case a multi-layered operation for Wilhelmshaven patrol officers. Only analysis of the blood sample will reveal the precise proof of substances.
Illegal street racing with light motor vehicles such as scooters and e-scooters is attracting increasing attention in urban areas. Police and public prosecutors treat flight from checks as an indication of awareness of a legal violation. Hit-and-run on Oldenburger Straße
Earlier on Friday, at around 1.00 p.m., a rear-end collision occurred on Oldenburger Straße (B 210) at the turning lane towards Peterstraße. The person responsible drove into a vehicle waiting at a traffic light and caused property damage to both cars. When the 37-year-old victim sought to involve the police, the person responsible left the scene unlawfully. Investigations in this matter are ongoing. Attempted burglary on Peterstraße
On late Friday afternoon, an attempt was made to break open an apartment door on Peterstraße. Damage was found on the lock cylinder, but the unknown offenders did not succeed in entering the apartment. The lock cylinder was so badly damaged that a locksmith had to replace it. Witnesses who made observations relating to the incident are asked to contact Wilhelmshaven police.
Drunk driving and traffic offences at the weekend
On Saturday evening at 9.35 p.m., officers checked a 39-year-old e-scooter rider in the Am Wiesenhof area who had previously been observed by witnesses. A breath alcohol test showed a concentration of 2.60 per mille. The man was taken to Wilhelmshaven hospital for a blood sample and, after all measures were completed, placed in police custody. Proceedings for drunk driving are under way.
In the early hours of Sunday, a radio patrol stopped a 15-year-old e-scooter rider in Freiligrathstraße. The scooter was travelling at 35 km/h, well above the permitted 20 km/h. Proceedings for driving without a licence have been initiated against the young man from Wilhelmshaven. Shortly afterwards, a witness reported a car being driven in serpentine lines on Papingastraße. In Edo-Wiemken-Straße, the 50-year-old driver was stopped; a breath alcohol test showed 1.72 per mille. Her driving licence was seized.
The accumulation of intoxicated e-scooter and car drivers over a single weekend illustrates the continuous control pressure exerted by Wilhelmshaven police. Witness reports played a decisive role in several of the night-time operations and enabled officers to stop conspicuous driving behaviour at an early stage.
Serious drunk driving during the night
At around 1.20 a.m., a 29-year-old man collided with a lamp post in Börsenstraße and then attempted to leave the scene with his passenger. Police officers were able to stop both men in the immediate vicinity. A breath alcohol test showed 2.19 per mille. A blood sample was taken from the driver in hospital; his 35-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries. Proceedings for road endangerment and negligent bodily harm are under way against the man.
On Sunday morning at 4.07 a.m., a 27-year-old man lost control on wet road surface in Kurt-Schumacher-Straße and crashed into a street lamp. A breath alcohol test showed 1.32 per mille. After a blood sample was taken, his driving licence was confiscated; he is prohibited from driving vehicles requiring a licence.
