8 trips under alcohol and drug influence in Gera
As part of targeted traffic checks, Gera police detected a total of eight road users on Friday, 10 July 2026, and in the night leading into Sunday, 12 July 2026, who were participating in road traffic under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating substances. The operations covered several districts in Gera as well as the town of Ronneburg and show how closely the Gera State Police Inspection (LPI-G) of the Thuringian police pursues violations of regulations on driving under the influence. The authority's press office provided information on the individual cases and the proceedings initiated.
Several cannabis findings on Friday morning
As early as Friday morning at around 11:50 a.m., police officers checked a 37-year-old e-scooter rider in Amthorstraße. A preliminary drug test returned positive for cannabis. E-scooters in Germany are subject to the same regulations as other motor vehicles when it comes to driving under the influence of intoxicating substances. A positive rapid test usually triggers further medical and legal steps.
Just a few hours later, at around 2:10 p.m., officers stopped another 39-year-old e-scooter rider at Talstraße on the corner of Schmelzhüttenstraße. His preliminary drug test also returned positive for cannabis. The two morning cases show that police also specifically check electric micro-vehicles during daytime hours, which are increasingly used in urban areas.
In the evening of the same day, the checks continued unabated. At around 7:00 p.m., a 28-year-old car driver was stopped in Vogtlandstraße, whose drug test also reacted positive for cannabis. In all three cases, police documented suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicating substances and initiated the usual further steps to secure the matter forensically. These usually include blood samples and the initiation of corresponding proceedings.
Alcohol checks and mixed violations on Friday evening
In addition to the drug-related cases, several alcohol checks were also the focus on Friday evening. At around 10:00 p.m., officers checked a 38-year-old Mazda driver in Straße der Jugend. A breath alcohol test showed a value of 0.8 per mille. Shortly afterwards, at around 11:00 p.m., police subjected a 53-year-old Toyota driver in Prof.-Simmel-Straße to a traffic check. The breath alcohol test showed 0.6 per mille. Both values are in a range that can lead to fines, driving bans or criminal consequences depending on further circumstances.
At around 11:20 p.m., police officers checked a 30-year-old Peugeot driver in August-Bebel-Straße in Ronneburg. In addition to slight alcohol intoxication, officers also detected influence from cannabis. This case therefore combined both alcohol and drug influence and underlines the range of violations detected within a single control weekend. Ronneburg is located in the district of Greiz and is also covered by the Gera police inspection.
Serious alcohol offence without driving licence
On Sunday evening, 11 July 2026, at around 8:25 p.m., officers checked a 42-year-old car driver in Franz-Stephan-Straße in Gera. A breath alcohol test showed a value of 2.03 per mille. The man was also unable to present a valid driving licence. Proceedings have now been initiated against him, among other things for drunk driving and driving without a licence. A blood sample was taken at hospital to forensically confirm the alcohol level. Values above two per mille are considered serious violations and can have significant criminal consequences.
Extremely high value for cyclist at night
In the early hours of Sunday, 12 July 2026, at around 1:30 a.m., police officers checked a 41-year-old cyclist in the area of Wiesestraße and Debschwitzer Straße. A breath alcohol test showed 2.63 per mille. Criminal proceedings for drunk driving were initiated against the man and a blood sample was also taken. Cyclists are also subject to drunk driving regulations when travelling while intoxicated. The exceptionally high measured value illustrates the danger posed by intoxicated road users regardless of vehicle type.
Police measures and proceedings
In all eight cases, officers prohibited further travel and initiated the corresponding administrative or criminal proceedings. Following positive drug tests and conspicuous alcohol values, blood samples, securing relevant evidence and reporting to the responsible public prosecutor's office are standard measures of the LPI-G. The prohibition on continuing the journey serves the immediate protection of other road users and prevents those involved from travelling dangerously on the road again.
