Göttingen: Dealer arrested after drug checks
The Göttingen police inspectorate is continuing its targeted checks at Waageplatz and the neighbouring Robert-Gernhardt-Platz without let-up. The centrally located area in the city centre has been designated a police control location under Section 13 of the Lower Saxony Police and Public Order Authority Act since April 2026. The reason is persistent problems with narcotics crime and offences involving violence. On Tuesday, 21 July 2026, renewed checks led to several investigations, a provisional arrest and the seizure of marijuana already packaged for sale.
Waageplatz control location as an operational focus
Waageplatz and the surrounding streets, paths and squares have been a focus of Göttingen police for some time. The designation as a control location gives officers an extended catalogue of measures. Different units have since been carrying out continuous, long-term checks there. The aim is to push back open trafficking in narcotics and to stop related offences at an early stage. The authorities stress that the presence is not short-term activism but part of a lasting strategy.
Earlier operations in the area had already identified suspects and led to proceedings. The latest action on Tuesday afternoon continues that series. Checks focused in particular on Waageplatz itself and the immediately adjacent Robert-Gernhardt-Platz. According to police, officers again observed behaviour there pointing to commercial drug dealing.
Proceedings for commercial drug trafficking
During the control operation, police opened investigations into commercial drug trafficking against two suspects, among others. At the centre is a 22-year-old man from the Northeim district. According to the press office, investigators had observed him selling narcotics on several occasions. Officers also knew that the young man had repeatedly breached a ban on staying in the area and had therefore already been held in long-term custody.
During the check on Tuesday, the suspect allegedly offered the officers money several times so that they would refrain from arrest and prosecution. Officers then also opened a bribery investigation. After presenting the facts to the Göttingen public prosecutor's office and consulting the competent judge at the local court, a provisional arrest was ordered so that the main hearing could take place.
Appearance before the custody judge
The arrested man was brought before the competent custody judge on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, under accelerated proceedings. Police see the case as further evidence that intensive checks at Waageplatz are having an effect and that suspects from the drug scene are being consistently brought before the courts. The authority did not give further detail in this release on whether and to what extent additional custody decisions were taken.
Resistance and livestream by an alleged buyer
In parallel, officers are investigating a 27-year-old alleged drug buyer from Baden-Württemberg. Proceedings were opened against him, among other things, for resisting enforcement officers and for a violation of the artistic copyright act. According to current findings, the man is believed to have secretly livestreamed the police measures directed against him on a well-known social media platform. When police seized his mobile phone, he then actively resisted.
From the investigators' perspective, the case shows how closely drug dealing, public staging and conflicts with officers can be linked at known meeting points. Live broadcasts of control situations create additional challenges for officers because witnesses, suspects and outsiders can receive information and react at the same time.
Marijuana seized in sales units
During the checks, investigators found and seized around 22 grams of marijuana. The drugs had already been packed into scene-typical sales units intended for further sale. Compared with major finds, the quantity is modest, but from a police perspective it documents ongoing street-level dealing on site. Such packs are regarded as a typical indicator of urban street sales.

Insights from observation are meant to turn into concrete proceedings more quickly.
Lasting presence rather than a one-off action
By designating the area a control location, police signal that they will maintain the focus over the long term. The combination of observation, identity checks, seizures and swift referral to prosecutors and the courts is intended to make open dealing more difficult. At the same time, residents and passers-by who have long been confronted with the scene and related conflicts are to be relieved.
The latest operation underlines that even smaller quantities and individual sales can be enough to trigger investigations and arrests. For alleged dealers and buyers, the ongoing presence means a higher risk of detection. Police say they will continue the measures around Waageplatz consistently and will keep pursuing violations of narcotics law and related offences.
