Drugs at the wheel: checks in Hameln
From Friday, 7 August 2026, to Sunday, 9 August 2026, officers of the Hameln-Pyrmont/Holzminden police inspectorate carried out intensive traffic checks in Hameln, Bad Münder and Bad Pyrmont. The focus was on driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication, as well as breaches of licence and registration rules. In several cases officers opened criminal and administrative offence proceedings and stopped dangerous journeys early.
Friday checks in Bad Münder and Hameln
On Friday at around 15:55, police stopped a 28-year-old female driver at the Rohmel-Center in Bad Münder. A drug test returned a positive result. Officers ordered a blood sample and banned her from continuing to drive. The incident forms part of measures aimed at exposing and punishing narcotics influence in road traffic.
At around 16:45, a 33-year-old cyclist fell on the cycle path of the Münsterbrücke in Hameln and was seriously injured. A breath alcohol test showed a provisional reading of 2.16 per mille. After initial hospital treatment, a blood sample was also taken. The case underlines that the risk does not come from cars alone: bicycles ridden under heavy alcohol influence can cause serious injuries.
At 18:18, officers checked a 37-year-old e-scooter rider at Bahnhofplatz in Hameln. The breath alcohol test showed 1.39 per mille. A blood sample followed. Because ownership was unclear and the e-scooter carried an unrelated insurance plate, police seized the vehicle. Alcohol impairment thus coincided with irregularities in marking and insurance.
Saturday: driving ban, cocaine and amphetamines
On Saturday at around 03:40, police stopped a 60-year-old male driver in Bahnhofstraße in Bad Münder. Because of an existing driving ban, he was not allowed to operate a motor vehicle. The car also had no valid third-party liability insurance. Further travel was prohibited; number plates and the vehicle key were seized. The case shows how closely driving bans and insurance issues are linked to road safety.
At around 12:50, during a check of a 42-year-old male driver near Hammelstein in Hameln, a drug test tested positive for cocaine and amphetamines. There were also doubts as to whether he held a valid driving licence. Police took a blood sample and stopped further travel. The detection of synthetic stimulants and cocaine shows that hard narcotics can severely impair fitness to drive.
At 21:06, officers checked a 65-year-old male driver in Kaiserstraße in Hameln. A breath alcohol test exceeded 2 per mille. A blood sample was taken and his driving licence was seized. A few hours later, at around 22:40, police checked an unregistered car in Hagener Straße in Bad Pyrmont. The 34-year-old driver from Langenhagen held no driving licence. There were indications of influence by drugs and medication; a blood sample was ordered.
Suspicion of illegal trade in narcotics
In the case of the 34-year-old from Langenhagen, police go beyond a pure traffic offence: there is suspicion of illegal trade in narcotics and pharmaceuticals. Besides number plates and the vehicle key, officers secured prescription medication and a four-figure sum of cash. The combination of missing registration, missing licence, possible drug and medication influence and the trading suspicion places the incident in the context of narcotics crime.
For investigators, that Saturday evening in Bad Pyrmont is therefore more than a routine stop. The seized medication and cash may point to structures beyond the individual driver. Whether and to what extent the suspicion of illegal trade is confirmed remains subject to further inquiry. What is clear is that traffic checks not only uncover drink-driving but can also expose traces of drug trafficking.
Further cases on Sunday
On Sunday at around 18:50, a witness in Am Stockhof in Hameln saw an apparently heavily intoxicated man get into a car and drive off. In the subsequent check, the breath alcohol test of the 66-year-old showed 1.67 per mille. Police took a blood sample and confiscated his licence. At around 21:17, officers in Mündersche Straße in Eimbeckhausen stopped a 40-year-old male driver whose licence had already been revoked in December 2021. Further travel was banned and the licence he was carrying was seized for verification.
According to police, the published cases are only a selection of proceedings opened that weekend. They cover alcohol at the wheel and on a bicycle as well as positive drug tests for cocaine and amphetamines, driving without a licence and suspicion of trade in narcotics and pharmaceuticals. POK Justus Weigel of the press office of the Hameln-Pyrmont/Holzminden police inspectorate stresses that every journey under the influence of alcohol or drugs is an avoidable danger for drivers and bystanders alike – whether by car, bicycle or e-scooter.
The checks were therefore not an end in themselves but aimed at ending dangerous journeys early and preventing serious accidents. At the same time, the findings and the trading suspicion in Bad Pyrmont show that dense traffic controls can be a tool of everyday drug enforcement. Where narcotics wipe out fitness to drive or appear as trade goods in a vehicle, traffic policing and narcotics law intersect. The Hameln-Pyrmont/Holzminden police inspectorate intends to continue this approach and keep highlighting the risks of alcohol and drugs on the road.
