Drug checks: 253 vehicles screened in Palatinate

On the night from Friday, June 19, 2026, to Saturday, June 20, 2026, officers of the Ludwigshafen Police Directorate conducted extensive traffic controls between 6:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. Personnel were deployed in the city of Ludwigshafen as well as in the areas of Frankenthal, Speyer, and Schifferstadt. Especially during nighttime hours, when the controls took place, the risk of traffic offenses under the influence of alcohol or drugs statistically increases.

The choice of the time window from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. indicates that police were focusing particularly on evening and nighttime hours. During this period, many weekend activities begin, and the likelihood rises that drivers get behind the wheel after celebrations or events while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Simultaneous presence in multiple cities required coordinated deployment planning and sufficient personnel.

Focus on alcohol, drugs, and medication

The central focus of the controls was uncovering driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, and medication. While alcohol checks with breath tests and, where necessary, blood samples have been standard for decades, screening for drug influence is gaining increasing importance. Police officers can order saliva tests or blood samples if drug use is suspected. Certain medications can also impair driving ability when not taken as prescribed or when combined with other substances.

Including medication influence in the control focus shows that police are not looking exclusively at illegal narcotics but at all substances that can impair driving safety. Six investigations initiated

A total of 253 vehicles were checked during the focused controls. Police initiated investigations against six people on suspicion of drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs. Driving under the influence of drugs is prosecuted as a criminal offense in Germany and can result in fines, driving bans, or prison sentences depending on severity. Further violations among 253 checks

In addition to suspected cases involving alcohol and drugs, officers recorded numerous other traffic violations. A total of 43 administrative offenses were penalized. These predominantly concerned drivers who were on the road without wearing a seat belt. The seat belt is considered one of the most effective measures to protect occupants in accidents, and failure to use it is therefore consistently penalized.

Furthermore, controllers found one driver operating a vehicle without a valid driving license. Driving without a license is a serious violation that can be punished with significant sanctions. For two other drivers, the operating permit for the respective vehicle had expired due to unverified technical modifications. Such modifications can impair road safety when they have not been approved by a recognized inspection facility.

Road safety and Vision Zero

The Ludwigshafen Police Directorate emphasized in its statement that traffic monitoring is among the central tasks of the police. It is crucial for road safety and is carried out year-round. With a view to the "Vision Zero" strategy, police pursue the goal of drastically reducing the number of road deaths and serious injuries in Germany by 2030. The main causes of accidents are in focus: insufficient safety distance, excessive speed, and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The nighttime focused controls in Ludwigshafen, Frankenthal, Speyer, and Schifferstadt thus stand in a broader societal context.
