Cannabis plantations found in Marl
On Thursday, 30 July, Recklinghausen police carried out extensive searches of several apartments and commercial halls in Marl, Haltern am See and Duisburg. Officers discovered two cannabis plantations and arrested four men aged between 25 and 66. The suspects are accused of gang-related cultivation, production and trafficking of cannabis in a not insignificant quantity. The Essen public prosecutor's office and Recklinghausen police are jointly leading the investigation.
Searches at three locations
The operation began on Thursday morning and covered several locations in the Ruhr area and the Recklinghausen district. In addition to the Recklinghausen riot police, two police dogs and the NRW truck unit were deployed. The aim was to check leads pointing to organised cannabis cultivation and to secure possible production sites. Investigators had previously gathered information suggesting a networked structure of cultivation and distribution.
Apartments and commercial properties in Marl, Haltern am See and Duisburg were searched at the same time. Coordinating several sites underlines the scale of the case: authorities believe the suspects did not act in isolation but within a division of labour. Evidence was to be secured in parallel wherever possible before leads could be destroyed or suspects could flee.
Cannabis plantation on Bergstraße in Marl
On Bergstraße in Marl, officers discovered a cannabis plantation. Two suspects were caught and arrested on site. The men are 25 and 31 years old and come from Tunisia. A larger quantity of chemicals and typical equipment allegedly used to produce narcotics were also stored in the hall. The finds suggest that the site was intended not only for cultivation but also for further processing.
After evidence has been secured, the barrels and canisters are being disposed of with support from the fire service and a specialist company. Disposal of hazardous chemicals is a standard part of such operations because improper storage can endanger residents and officers. Measures at the Marl site continued while searches proceeded in parallel at the other locations.
Further plantation in Haltern am See
In Haltern am See, police also discovered a larger cannabis plantation in a company building on Münsterknapp. A 31-year-old Albanian man was arrested there. The find in a commercially used property once again shows how growers use workshops and halls to conceal production and storage. Such sites often provide enough space and infrastructure for commercial cultivation without immediately attracting attention.
Discovering two plantations in a single operation strengthens the suspicion of gang-related structures. Investigators now need to identify supply routes, customers and any further sites. At the same time, the seized plants, equipment and chemicals must be forensically examined to determine quantities, potency and production capacity.
Arrests and evidence in Duisburg
In Duisburg, police secured further evidence in two apartments, including mobile phones. Digital devices play a central role in such cases: chat histories, contacts and location data can map links between cultivation, logistics and sales. Evaluation is usually handled by specialised units and can take weeks.
Wesel police arrested another man in Duisburg, a 66-year-old from Germany. He is linked to the investigation in the Recklinghausen district. An arrest warrant was already in place against him. By the end of the operation, four men had been arrested: two Tunisian suspects from Marl, an Albanian suspect from Haltern am See, and the German suspect from Duisburg.
Pre-trial detention and ongoing investigation
The day after the operation, three suspects were brought before Essen District Court. Pre-trial detention warrants were issued for all three as requested. The court therefore sees a risk of flight or obstruction of justice, or a level of suspicion serious enough to justify provisional custody. The police statement does not detail the individual grounds for detention.
The charge is gang-related cultivation, production and trafficking of cannabis in a not insignificant quantity. Under narcotics law, a “not insignificant quantity” is a legally relevant threshold that can substantially aggravate the assessment of the offence.
